How To Win An Unbreakable Grip In BJJ
Today, we’re going to talk about how to win a strong unbreakable grip in Jiu Jitsu. Firstly, there’s no such thing as an absolutely unbreakable grip in Jiu Jitsu; however, we can win very strong and very dominant grips that are exceptionally difficult to break.
As I start a match with my friend Stephan, it’s very unlikely that I’ll be able to just walk up to him and grab a super strong grip right away. Things will typically start with me winning something simple and non-threatening like just grabbing his hands. From there, I may be able to win a low lapel grip. Stephan will probably attempt to break the lapel grip; but, as he does so, I’ll get a super strong sleeve grip which will feed me my arm pit grip which will get me my belt grip.
Ultimately, my point is, you want to expect your opponent to try and break your initial grip. But you already have a secondary grip waiting for them. Grip fighting is basically counter fighting. Thus, the dialogue should be: you grab, they defend, you grab again but in a better position.
Give this grip fighting strategy a try the next time you’re on the mats!
