There’s many ways to tie your BJJ belt; but, this is my absolute favourite way to do it.

Tying your belt is the first skill every BJJ beginner learns. Your BJJ belt is so much more than just a chunk of cotton that you wrap around your waist.

The belt is a signal of your dedication and your work ethic.  Your belt showcases the sacrifices you’ve made for Jiu Jitsu.  Further, it is a symbol of your love and affection for Jiu Jitsu.  Above all, your belt is a demonstration of your love and devotion to yourself, and how you put your health and personal growth first.

Ultimately, how you tie your belt is important.  You want to do it the right way because you like doing things the best way possible.  While there’s many different ways to tie your BJJ belt, this method, in my opinion is the best way possible.

Step 1.  Take the end of your belt with the label and place it on your left hip.  Next, circle the belt around your waist.

Your belt should go around your waist twice.

Step 2.  Take the end of the belt that is now on top and pull it underneath everything.  Do your best to keep your belt snug around your waist during this entire time.

Step 3.  This next step can be a bit tricky.  We now have two ends.  One end pointing up and one end pointing down.  Grab the end that’s pointing down and insert it between the first layer and the second layer.

Step 4.  Step 4 is the part that everyone messes up.  Your belt is going to seem like the Millennium Falcon flying through an asteroid field.  Find the end of your belt that’s pointing up and weave it through the loop created by the other end of the belt.  In addition, you want to thread this end of the belt in-between the bottom layer and the top layer.

Step 5.  The final stage of tying your belt is the most satisfying. Pull your belt nice and tight while cleaning up the knot so it looks like a diamond.

There you have it!!  The best way to tie your BJJ belt.  Practice this a few times and soon you’ll be able to tie your belt blind folded! 😃
